Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) Lightning Imager Instrument – Signing Ceremony

Meteosat Third Generation programme

Selex ES has officially signed the contract to supply Lightning Imager Instruments for the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) programme.
The MTG programme will revolutionise weather forecasting and environmental monitoring by providing significant improvement over the capabilities of the current Meteosat generation.
The ceremony took place in Palazzo Vecchio in Florence on February 7th, 2013 in the presence of European and Italian authorities in the field of Earth Observation.
The contract, signed by Selex ES CEO Fabrizio Giulianini and Thales Alenia Space Head of Procurement Raphael Berruyer, will see Selex ES supplying four Lightning Imager Instruments for the Meteosat Third Generation programme funded by ASI, ESA and EUMETSAT. The overall value of the contract, placed with prime contractor Thales Alenia Space France, is about Euro 50M and will run for about 6 years until the launch of the first satellites in 2017. The design and manufacture of the four Lightning Imager Instruments will be carried out by Selex ES at its Campi Bisenzio site.
The LIIs will continuously observe Europe, Africa and part of South America and detect lightning discharges in order to produce data for short term weather forecasting and to assess the influence of climate change in the atmosphere.
This contract represents an important cornerstone for Selex ES Space activities, further consolidating our leading position in electro-optical instruments for space missions.

EUMETSAT is preparing for the next European operational geostationary meteorological satellite system in the form of the Meteosat Third Generation (MTG). MTG will revolutionise weather forecasting and environmental monitoring as we now know them, by providing significant improvement over the capabilities of the current Meteosat generation.

    Mission Overview
The Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) satellite programme is expected to bring a step change in capability for operational meteorology. The programme should guarantee access to space-acquired meteorological data until, at least, the late 2030s.
    Instruments
MTG system will consist of two parallel in orbit positioned satellites, the MTG-I imaging and MTG-S infrared and ultraviolet sounder.

    Services
With Meteosat Third Generation (MTG) the user community can look forward to continued visible and infrared imagery observation from geostationary orbit, and — for the first time — observations from infrared and ultraviolet/near infrared sounding instruments.
